RECAP: VICTORIA AVEYARD BOOK SIGNING TOUR

After three long months of not seeing my bookish besties, we're finally gathered once again for the book signing tour of NewYork Times Bestselling author of Red Queen, Victoria Aveyard! I didn't realize how much I missed them until I saw them again!

Here are some of the things that Victoria shared with us:
  • Victoria advised aspiring writers that you have to finish your first draft. Write the end at the end and don't edit much along the way. You can give yourself the benefit of a doubt.
  • When she was asked about the sequence of how she writes, she said that for Red Queen, she started with the main character then the world building. But usually, the latter comes first and the character is what makes readers stay in a story.
  • Red Queen was supposed to be a duology at first, but then Victoria thought she need more. Three books would be rush, she thought. So she went back to Harper and said she needed another book.
  • Universal Studios has the screen option for Red Queen. The screen writer is Jennifer _______ (Sorry I didn't hear her last name clearly).
  • Her favorite fantasy novels:
    • 1. Lord of the Rings trilogy
    • 2. Harry Potter series
    • 3. A Song of Ice and Fire series
  • She learned pretty much every story-telling trick from film school.
  • For her, the entire middle part of Red Queen is the most difficult part to write because it's more about build up.
  • She did a lot of Google translation of English-Latin for Red Queen.
  • The third book will start immediately where Glass Sword ends.
  • VA said, "I definitely want to write until the day I die." *laughs*
  • After writing the fourth book, she might go back into screenplay writing for the mean time before she started with her next book.
  • When asked about the feminism in Red Queen, she said that she's a feminist so it's normal to write about a woman or treating men and women equally.
  • She naturally likes genre mashups: Dystopia, fantasy and science fiction.
  • On what to expect of Mare on the 3rd and 4th books? More of her emotional journey.
With the Queen V!

UPCOMING EVENT: CARRY ON BY RAINBOW ROWELL PH LAUNCH

Calling all Rainbow Rowell Filipino fans! (And Simon - Baz shippers out there!) There will be a fan organized book launch for her next book, Carry On!

I've been wanting to blurb something about this since last, last week but I can't so now I am so excited to announce that we're having another bookish event this October! Huge thanks to National Book Store for making this event possible!

CARRY ON
BY RAINBOW ROWELL

Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen.
That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right.
Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here--it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up.
Carry On - The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow is a ghost story, a love story, and a mystery. It has just as much kissing and talking as you'd expect from a Rainbow Rowell story - but far, far more monsters.

When: October 10, 3 - 5 pm
Where: Powerbooks Greenbelt

Registration starts at 2pm!

Click here to view the Facebook event invitation and see who else are coming!

ABOUT 99 DAYS
Molly Barlow is facing one long, hot summer—99 days—with the boy whose heart she broke and the boy she broke it for . . . his brother.

Day 1: Julia Donnelly eggs my house my first night back in Star Lake, and that’s how I know everyone still remembers everything. She has every right to hate me, of course: I broke Patrick Donnelly’s heart the night everything happened with his brother, Gabe. Now I’m serving out my summer like a jail sentence: Just ninety-nine days till I can leave for college and be done.

Day 4: A nasty note on my windshield makes it clear Julia isn’t finished. I’m expecting a fight when someone taps me on the shoulder, but it’s just Gabe, home from college and actually happy to see me. “For what it’s worth, Molly Barlow,” he says, “I’m really glad you’re back.”

Day 12: Gabe wouldn’t quit till he got me to come to this party, and I’m surprised to find I’m actually having fun. I think he’s about to kiss me—and that’s when I see Patrick. My Patrick, who’s supposed to be clear across the country. My Patrick, who’s never going to forgive me.

ABOUT KATIE COTUGNO
Katie Cotugno went to Catholic school for thirteen years which makes her, as an adult, both extremely superstitious and prone to crushes on boys wearing blazers. She routinely finds herself talking about the romantic endeavors of characters on TV shows as if they actually exist in the world. Katie is a Pushcart Prize nominee whose work has appeared in The Iowa Review, The Broadkill Review, The Apalachee Review, and Argestes, as well as on Nerve.com. Her first novel, HOW TO LOVE, is out now from Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins. The great loves of Katie's life include child's pose, her little sister, and mozzarella and honey sandwiches. She lives in Boston with her husband, Tom.

ABOUT BETTER THAN PERFECT
Juliet Newman has it all. A picture-perfect family; a handsome, loving boyfriend; and a foolproof life plan: ace her SATs, get accepted into Harvard early decision, and live happily ever after.

But when her dad moves out and her mom loses it, Juliet begins questioning the rules she’s always lived by. And to make everything even more complicated there’s Declan, the gorgeous boy who makes her feel alive and spontaneous—and who’s totally off-limits. Torn between the life she always thought she wanted and one she never knew was possible, Juliet begins to wonder: What if perfect isn't all it’s cracked up to be?

Melissa Kantor once again delivers a tale that is equal parts surprising, humorous, heartbreaking, and romantic. Powerful and honest, Juliet’s story brilliantly portrays the highs and lows of life in high school and will resonate with any reader who has experienced either.

ABOUT MELISSA KANTOR
Melissa Kantor is the author of “Maybe One Day”; “Confessions of a Not It Girl”, an ALA Booklist Best Romance Novel for Youth; “If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where’s My Prince?”, a YALSA Teens Top Ten Pick; “The Breakup Bible”, an ALA Best Books for Young Adults nominee; “Girlfriend Material”, a Junior Library Guild selection; and “The Darlings are Forever” and “The Darlings in Love”, a Junior Library Guild selection. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her family.

ABOUT EXTRAORDINARY MEANS
From the author of The Beginning of Everything: two teens with a deadly disease fall in love on the brink of a cure.

At seventeen, overachieving Lane finds himself at Latham House, a sanatorium for teens suffering from an incurable strain of tuberculosis. Part hospital and part boarding school, Latham is a place of endless rules and confusing rituals, where it’s easier to fail breakfast than it is to flunk French.

There, Lane encounters a girl he knew years ago. Instead of the shy loner he remembers, Sadie has transformed. At Latham, she is sarcastic, fearless, and utterly compelling. Her friends, a group of eccentric troublemakers, fascinate Lane, who has never stepped out of bounds his whole life. And as he gradually becomes one of them, Sadie shows him their secrets: how to steal internet, how to sneak into town, and how to disable the med sensors they must wear at all times.

But there are consequences to having secrets, particularly at Latham House. And as Lane and Sadie begin to fall in love and their group begins to fall sicker, their insular world threatens to come crashing down. Told in alternating points of view, Extraordinary Means is a darkly funny story about doomed friendships, first love, and the rare miracle of second chances.

ABOUT ROBYN SCHNEIDER
Robyn Schneider is a 28-year-old writer and videoblogger. She is the author of the critically-acclaimed novel The Beginning of Everything, which has earned numerous starred reviews, appears on many state reading lists, and is published in over a dozen countries. Robyn is a graduate of Columbia University, where she studied creative writing, and the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, where she earned a Masters of Bioethics. She lives in Los Angeles, California, but also on the internet.

THE GRISHA TRILOGY

SHADOW AND BONE
Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha…and the secrets of her heart.

SIEGE AND STORM
Darkness never dies.

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land, all while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. But she can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long.

The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her–or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.

RUIN AND RISING
The capital has fallen. The Darkling rules Ravka from his shadow throne.

Now the nation’s fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army.

Deep in an ancient network of tunnels and caverns, a weakened Alina must submit to the dubious protection of the Apparat and the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Yet her plans lie elsewhere, with the hunt for the elusive firebird and the hope that an outlaw prince still survives.

Alina will have to forge new alliances and put aside old rivalries as she and Mal race to find the last of Morozova’s amplifiers. But as she begins to unravel the Darkling’s secrets, she reveals a past that will forever alter her understanding of the bond they share and the power she wields. The firebird is the one thing that stands between Ravka and destruction—and claiming it could cost Alina the very future she’s fighting for.

RECAP: LANG LEAV IN MANILA

Last Sunday was probably one of the greatest moments in my bookish life. National Book Store brought one of my writing inspirations here in Manila - Lang Leav.

I met Lang last year and she said she'll be back and well, she really did! She is such a lovely and sweet lady. I love writing poems so this event made the tongue-tied poet withing me very happy. Her writing skills is amazing and for me, it's probably one of the best poetry writing styles I've read in my entire life.

She writes from her instincts because it offers a lot more compact to the readers. And most of the time, it all comes naturally from her. It's something that she has always done way before. Like most of us, writing is her own way of getting her feelings out. Especially during the rough and tough times of her life, it's when she can write the most. She told us this story about when her best friend's mother who passed away. This drove her into deep sadness since she considered her best friend's mother as her second mother.

We asked her where her inspirations come from, she told us that aside from personal experiences, her interaction with her readers is one of her inspirations. Some of her poems are derived from the stories her readers tell her.

She told us that the writing process for her second book, Lullabies, was easier because of Love and Misadventure's success, as well as she already had a publisher by then.

Recap: Marie Lu Blogger Forum and Book Signing Tour

Last Sunday, I met the pretty and talented Marie Lu! She's not only good in writing heroes and villains, but she's soooooo good at drawing. We were able to see her draw her characters in action!

To sum up everything that we talked about, here are some tidbits of the blogger forum with Marie Lu:
  • She didn't actually know she's writing a book for young adults until she gave her first draft of Legend to her agent. In fact, she never even heard of young adult before.
  • She'd love to produce a picture book someday.
  • Her inspiration when it comes to her characters' names:
    • Day - optimistic side, always positive, thief with a heart of gold (Hans Solo, Robin Hood)
    • June - named after the month of June, generous, intelligent, ambitious, a female Sherlock Holmes
  • Legend was inspired by the real-life world dystopia (North Korea, etc.)
  • When it comes to her writing process, she likes to draw her characters first to figure out who they are or what their personality is.
  • From writing a dystopian novel to fantasy: she grew up reading fantasy books so fantasy will always be there
  • When it comes to the process of writing the next two books on her Legend trilogy, there were no fan-reaction-inspired parts because she already sort of finished the books on her mind so she just watch their reactions hopelessly.
  • The hardest book to write for her was Champion. Regarding its ending, she told us she loves bittersweet endings. Besides, there's no other way to end it and it's the ending she always wanted to write and she's satisfied about it.
  • I asked her if she has an odd ritual that she do before or during writing. She told us that she cannot write without listening to music. But she doesn't listen to music with lyrics because it sort of distract her writing. So instead, she listens mostly to soundtracks and ambient sounds or to songs with a different language because she cannot understand them and it cannot distract her.
  • She loves writing while inside the train. She said there's something about the sound of the moving train that is conducive.
  • When asked who's the bigger rebel: Day or June, she answered: She said maybe Day because of what he does. But still, she went for June because she had to absolutely change herself for like, a 180 degrees.
  • We asked her is she herself is a Day or June, she told us Day because he's emotionally driven and kind of paranoid, but then she said she's more like June because they were alike when it comes to panic, grief, romance, etc.
  • Another thing about her writing process, the switching of points of view, she said it's not actually that hard for her because it has been her writing style for almost 10 years.
  • On her latest novel, The Young Elites, she chose the villains as her protagonists. Of course, we asked her about that. She told us that she used them as her main characters because they are manipulative, cunning and doesn't care about what other people say. Plus, they're interesting to explore.
  • We also asked her how does she manage to write in a very cinematic way. She said it's because she's a visual person and it has something to do with her background with arts. She loves to draw what she thinks about and write what she see.
Aside from meeting a wonderful author, I was also glad to see my fellow bloggers and pretty ladies of Pinoy Book Tours!
