UPCOMING EVENT: CARRY ON BY RAINBOW ROWELL PH LAUNCH

Calling all Rainbow Rowell Filipino fans! (And Simon - Baz shippers out there!) There will be a fan organized book launch for her next book, Carry On!

I've been wanting to blurb something about this since last, last week but I can't so now I am so excited to announce that we're having another bookish event this October! Huge thanks to National Book Store for making this event possible!

CARRY ON
BY RAINBOW ROWELL

Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen.
That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right.
Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here--it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up.
Carry On - The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow is a ghost story, a love story, and a mystery. It has just as much kissing and talking as you'd expect from a Rainbow Rowell story - but far, far more monsters.

When: October 10, 3 - 5 pm
Where: Powerbooks Greenbelt

Registration starts at 2pm!

I changed Jack’s diaper early on Sunday morning and let his tired parents sleep in. After giving him his bottle, he went back to la-la-land. I then made coffee and sat outside drinking it while texting Ryan. Our training session had been canceled because Derek wanted to see us at the Org at ten in the morning.

I heard a noise inside and went back through the kitchen door to find my tiny sister-in-law trying to reach coffee mugs from the cabinet above her. She was getting on a small step I’d given her years ago as a present.

“Why do you insist on keeping things so high up when your head is hardly past the counter?” I asked as I reached around her to get the mug and set it down. I should have known better. As soon as I did that, her elbow connected with my rib and had me wincing.

“Stop making fun of me or I’ll break a bone next time,” Annie said.

“But you are perfect for it, Anniewee. You’re already fun-sized,” I said, grabbing a cup for her.

“Whatever. It's up there because it’s Nick’s job. Obviously.”

“Go sit down, I’ll mix your cup. Where is he?”

“Sleeping. It was his turn for night duty.”

“Technically you can fix that by hitting him with some energy.” I personally loved when she transferred her energy to me. It was perfect for those all-nighters I was so fond of.

Annie had this ongoing Kinetic energy that could give the rest of us an extra boost to our own powers. It could also give me a certain oomph that kept me energized enough to last me a week or so. Sadly, I no longer got the chance to enjoy the benefits of her powers. I enjoyed Ryan’s instead.

I met Ryan in my last year in training. She’s a sensor and an amplifier. As a sensor, she could tell Luminaries apart from ordinary people, and because she was in tune with other people’s emotions she could tell if they were lying. As an amplifier, she couldn’t do much for herself, but she helped expand everyone else’s powers, times five.

With Annie, it was different: our energies would last a while and we’d keep going. But with Ryan, it was in the moment. She was a drug to us all. The strange thing was that she and Annie couldn’t do anything for each other. They were too evenly powerful in an unbalanced way. It didn’t matter, though; they never went on assignments together.

Annie and Nick were now partners with Derek, and they helped run the Org. But their idea of managing was turning Derek down whenever he brought up something they didn’t agree with. Before they had the baby, they went on assignments frequently and left Derek to run his own show. Adrenaline junkies was what they were.

I looked at her. “I’m telling you, Annie. You two should stop trying to deal with a baby like normal people.”

“No,” she said, taking a sip while the cup was still in my hand.

“Well that’s stupid; you are Luminaries. Take advantage.” I put my empty cup in the sink and smiled. “Speaking of, would you be a doll and charge up my new babe for me?”

She crinkled her nose. “That doesn’t sound like something I want to do.”

“Relax. As a birthday present to myself, I turned in my Prius for a Tesla S . . . S for sexy hybrid car. I can’t believe I forgot to show you guys. She’s like my bride, beautiful in white.”

“You and your hybrids. You could have just plugged in your car the whole time you were here. There’s a reason you installed a charge port in my garage.”

“Come on! Please?”

“If you want to be so environmental you should just teleport everywhere. You know, take advantage of being a Luminary yourself, instead of using me for your shenanigans.”

“First, Ryan is the environmental one. I would never hear the end of her yapping away if I didn’t get hybrids. Second, I have to keep up appearances that I’m normal for those who don’t know our secrets. How would you explain to your nosy neighbors why I was sitting outside if I didn’t walk or drive here?”

“Stop going outside where they can see you.”

I shook my head. “But I needed fresh air.”

“Uh huh, in February?” She raised her eyebrow. “Like I don’t know you were checking out their daughter?”

“Look at me. I run on heat. February air does nothing to me. And she just happened to be out there wiping snow off her car, that’s all. I even helped.”

“How, exactly?” Annie asked, putting both hands on her hips.

“When she wasn’t looking, a big chunk suddenly slid off. It was discreet, I promise.”

She sighed. “Fine, but this is the last time I charge it. And only because I’m curious to see your new car. Stop smiling.”

“You know your special touch will make it last for double the time, right? Your touch, Annie, is the key.” I ducked right on time to avoid her punch.

Footsteps behind me alerted me that Nick was up. “My wife’s touch is the key to what now? Keep flirting with her and I’ll make sure you’re unable to wake up next to girls for at least a month.”

“Whoa, hey, hey. No harm done,” I said, then teleported next to Annie to give her a kiss on the cheek.

“Dunno what’s the use of being a teleporter if you’re going to be driving around,” Nick said.

“I love to drive.”

“You love to speed.”

“What’s the difference?” I asked him.

“Stop it, you two. Let’s go charge your car up,” Annie said, pulling me toward the front door.

TEA-RRIFIC POST: CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY

Holla my Tea-rrific readers! I've been invited by Grammarly to share this infographic with you to celebrate International Literacy Day:

Our world today is perhaps more text-driven than at any other time in history. In the Digital Age, the ability to read and write can transform lives, fameilies, and even whole communities. Since UNESCO celebrated the very first International Literacy Day on September 8, 1966, the plight of millions of people around the world has improved through programs dedicated to helping marginalized populations become literate. But there is still a long way to go.

Illiteracy is more than just a lack of reading skills. Around the world, it is a clear predictor of poverty, illness, and disempowerment. It’s not a problem confined to the developing world, either. Even in the United States, there are thirty-two million adults who cannot read, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

To celebrate International Literacy Day and help raise awareness about the importance of literacy, we have gathered the latest literacy statistics from around the world into an infographic.

Literacy Day

They say you never forget your first love. No matter how many more come along or how much time goes by, there will always be that one person who will be forever embedded deep inside your heart and soul. For me, that was Jaxson Callahan.
We were complete opposites. I was a senator’s daughter. My parents were always too busy keeping up appearances on the political scene to show me love, so instead they bought my affection.
He was the son of a woman who allowed men to use and abuse her as well as him, just for her next fix.
We became each other’s solace during that summer we met, creating a lifetime of memories in three short months. I provided him with a sense of hope that there was more than just the harsh reality of the life he had grown accustomed to, and he showed me a genuine love that I had been yearning for my entire life. We vowed to be together forever. I loved him and he loved me…. and nothing would keep us apart.
Nothing except the secrets that were hiding in that small seaside town.
Secrets that altered our destiny. We were never given any warning as we watched our future shake, crumble and disappear altogether, leaving us with nothing but memories of a bittersweet past.
Life can be beautiful.
Life can be kind.
And, life can be heartless…..because nothing about our situation was fair.

“So, did you have a good birthday?” I asked.

“It’s just another day. Nothing special about it. I’d just as soon forget the day I was born.”

“Why are you so hard on yourself?” I second guessed myself for asking as the words spewed from my mouth.

“You just wouldn’t understand, Samantha.”

My whole life I hated being called that name, but hearing him say it was kind of nice. It was as if it was his and his name only for me. I was his Samantha, and he was my Jaxson.

“Maybe I could try. I’m a pretty good listener.”

He took another sip of his lemonade and placed it on the table. “I really have to go.” He stood up and looked down at the ground.

“I’m sorry. I – I didn’t’ mean to pry,” I said, standing up beside him. “It’s just, sometimes it helps to express how you’re feeling, and I’m –” He took me completely off guard when he grabbed my face in his hands, pulled me toward him, and placed a warm gentle kiss on my lips before smoothly slipping his tongue into my mouth. I was speechless as I pulled in my bottom lip still wanting to taste more of him when the kiss was over.

“You wanted me to express myself,” he whispered. “Well, that’s what I’ve been feeling from the time I walked up on this porch. I wanted to see if your lips felt as soft as they look. I wanted to get as close to you as I possibly could and breathe in your perfume that drives me crazy. And, maybe for one second of my life, I wanted to feel like I was worthy of someone like you. That’s how I was feeling, Samantha.”

#LOVEONLINEPENS: ONLINE GERMANY LAUNCH IN PH

Established in 1991 in Germany by Thomas and Alexandra Batsch, Online has become a trendsetter in the writing industry with its high-quality writing utensils for students, young people, and for those young at heart. The term “online” was coined by the founders which means being up-to-date in reference to writing. The company focuses on producing writing instruments for school and office with high quality level for functionality and technology.

Last Thursday, July 2, 2015, Online Germany officially launched its products here in the Philippines. Held at EDSA Beverage Design Studio, the event was a huge success. It was attended by different groups of young and adult designing teams like Type Kita Manila and of course, Abbey Sy, who also recently launched her very first book, The ABC's of Hand Lettering.

I attended the event with my boyfriend and blogger friends, Kate of The Bookaholic Blurbs and Dianne of Oops! I Read a Book Again who brought her sister, Lianne, with her. We had a great time talking about pens and there's even a mini calligraphy session with some of the calligraphers who attended the launch. EDSA Beverage Design Studion served buffet food, cocktails and coffee to guests.

I was lucky enough to have a short chat with Online's Business Development Manager, Mr. Alexander Batsch.

Here's the run through of our short conversation:

Me: What makes Online Pens different from other brands of pens?

Alexander: They are very fashionable. So we will change our collections every year for youngline and also every year for topline. So there is a change before Christmas season for the topline items and before the school season for the youngline items. We are always developing something that is very close to the trends that we see in fashion. So you can use our products like lifestyle products. It's not just a pen, it's also your personal item to express your style, your personal feelings, you can play around with the colors cause' it's something very unique.

M: I have a collection of pens, actually, so when National Book Store invited me, I was like "Oh yeah! I'm going to attend it!"

A: Great! Great!

M: Are you fascinated in calligraphy? Lettering?

A: I'm still practicing. So I have a very good teacher. She is an Australian partner. When she was in Germany she was also practicing with me, together with my calligraphy skills, or just my fine penmanship. Bacause I think you need to have this as a basis for starting doing real calligraphy. So I'm working on that, to have really proper penmanship, but of course, there's a lot to do for business, so time is short.

M: That's true. I'm also practicing calligraphy as a kind of hobby. And we actually have a great team here in Manila! Abbey Sy, she's one of my inspirations whenever I practice my lettering skills.

A: Nice! That's great. Is your online pen a calligraphy pen or a regular pen? Oh this is a regular pen. But that's also fine. Is it already inked inside?

M: I think not yet. I haven't tried it yet.

A: Okay. Calligraphy or fine writing looks even better with you have a wider nib. But let's see and try. Let me show you our calligraphy pen, it's one of our best sellers.

With Mr. Alexander Batsch
Mr. Batsch showed my his handwriting and wow he writes so straight even without guidelines! He showed me the difference of their regular pen and calligraphy pen.

Online Launch Photo Dump

Of course I took a lot of pictures; I love the ambiance of EDSA Beverage Design Studio!

They gave us our own Online Pen and got our name engraved on it!

They included a fountain pen and Abbey Sy's book in our kit!

*more pictures coming soon!*

They have a wide variety of pens with different colors and designs that will surely fit anyone's taste and personality. My Online pen writes so fine on any surface I put my paper on and doesn't snag on the paper fibers! Thanks to National Book Store for the invite, especially to JB, Chad and Louie! Your marketing team is the best!

Best friends since they could walk. In love since the age of fourteen.
Complete strangers since this morning.
He'll do anything to remember. She'll do anything to forget.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
#1 New York Times bestselling author of Hopeless joins forces with the New York Times bestselling author of Mud Vein. Together, they have created a gripping, romantic tale unlike any other.
"How odd to be made of flesh, balanced on bone, and filled with a soul you've never met."
Charlie Wynwood and Silas Nash have been best friends since they could walk. They've been in love since the age of fourteen.
But as of this morning...they are complete strangers.
Their first kiss, their first fight, the moment they fell in love...every memory has vanished.
"I don't care what our real first kiss was," he says. "That's the one I want to remember."
Charlie and Silas must work together to uncover the truth about what happened to them and why. But the more they learn about the couple they used to be...the more they question why they were ever together to begin with.
"I want to remember what it feels like to love someone like that. And not just anyone. I want to know what it feels like to love Charlie."

WHAT THE HELL REALLY HAPPENED TO THEM?
WHERE IS THE NEXT BOOK?
I NEED IT NOW.
RIGHT. NOW.

When Colleen and Tarryn announced that they wrote a book together, the book community exploded with excitement and awe. We all knew these authors wrote good books and may readers loved them. But I have to admit, I haven't read anything by Tarryn Fisher but based on what my friends said, she's as good as Colleen Hoover. They are both New Adult Romance writers, it's just that they have different writing styles. So when I heard about Never Never, I got mixed feelings of excitement and fear. Excited that they wrote a book together, and fear that their styles might clash and won't go along well.

So Never Never is about Charlie and Silas who both woke up with some sort of amnesia. They don't remember anything about themselves or about the people around them. They later on figured out that they are in a relationship so they tried to do things or meet people they are supposedly related with to see if it would somehow trigger a memory or something that they would remember.

What I noticed on the characters is that Silas does everything so they can remember. He's the one who wanted to remember what it feels like to be inlove with Charlie. He wanted to remember 'them'. He's trying to revive the spark between him and Charlie.

“Before, when I looked at her, she was just the girl who as experiencing this weird phenomenon with me. Now when I look at her, she's the girl I've apparently made love to for a while. The girl I apparently still love. I just wish I could remember what it's supposed to feel like.”
“I may not remember anything about her, but I would bet her smile was my favorite part of her”
But Charlie feels the opposite. Yes, she wanted to gain back her memories, but she doesn't want to remember anything about her feelings for Silas. I think she's in denial about their relationship. She doesn't even want to be called Charlie. She keeps on saying that she's not her and I'm not liking her attitude.
“I look away. I'm tired of liking him. I only have a day and a half worth of memories, but they're all filled with me not hating Silas. And now He's made it his personal mission to make me love him.”
To be honest, I almost dozed off while reading Never Never. I think Colleen and Tarryn's writing style doesn't combine well. I liked Silas, but I hated Charlie. The first 50% is completely nothing and the other half is full of questions and confusions. What I like about this book is the mystery and how Silas and Charlie made a plan to resolve their problem especially when they learned that it's not just that they lost their memories. SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT They have been losing it over and over again. SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT You should read it for you to understand what I'm trying to say here. And the ending fucking killed me. I hate cliffhangers!

“We were an us, Charlie. And holy shit, I can see why.”

ABOUT 99 DAYS
Molly Barlow is facing one long, hot summer—99 days—with the boy whose heart she broke and the boy she broke it for . . . his brother.

Day 1: Julia Donnelly eggs my house my first night back in Star Lake, and that’s how I know everyone still remembers everything. She has every right to hate me, of course: I broke Patrick Donnelly’s heart the night everything happened with his brother, Gabe. Now I’m serving out my summer like a jail sentence: Just ninety-nine days till I can leave for college and be done.

Day 4: A nasty note on my windshield makes it clear Julia isn’t finished. I’m expecting a fight when someone taps me on the shoulder, but it’s just Gabe, home from college and actually happy to see me. “For what it’s worth, Molly Barlow,” he says, “I’m really glad you’re back.”

Day 12: Gabe wouldn’t quit till he got me to come to this party, and I’m surprised to find I’m actually having fun. I think he’s about to kiss me—and that’s when I see Patrick. My Patrick, who’s supposed to be clear across the country. My Patrick, who’s never going to forgive me.

ABOUT KATIE COTUGNO
Katie Cotugno went to Catholic school for thirteen years which makes her, as an adult, both extremely superstitious and prone to crushes on boys wearing blazers. She routinely finds herself talking about the romantic endeavors of characters on TV shows as if they actually exist in the world. Katie is a Pushcart Prize nominee whose work has appeared in The Iowa Review, The Broadkill Review, The Apalachee Review, and Argestes, as well as on Nerve.com. Her first novel, HOW TO LOVE, is out now from Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins. The great loves of Katie's life include child's pose, her little sister, and mozzarella and honey sandwiches. She lives in Boston with her husband, Tom.

ABOUT BETTER THAN PERFECT
Juliet Newman has it all. A picture-perfect family; a handsome, loving boyfriend; and a foolproof life plan: ace her SATs, get accepted into Harvard early decision, and live happily ever after.

But when her dad moves out and her mom loses it, Juliet begins questioning the rules she’s always lived by. And to make everything even more complicated there’s Declan, the gorgeous boy who makes her feel alive and spontaneous—and who’s totally off-limits. Torn between the life she always thought she wanted and one she never knew was possible, Juliet begins to wonder: What if perfect isn't all it’s cracked up to be?

Melissa Kantor once again delivers a tale that is equal parts surprising, humorous, heartbreaking, and romantic. Powerful and honest, Juliet’s story brilliantly portrays the highs and lows of life in high school and will resonate with any reader who has experienced either.

ABOUT MELISSA KANTOR

ABOUT EXTRAORDINARY MEANS
From the author of The Beginning of Everything: two teens with a deadly disease fall in love on the brink of a cure.

At seventeen, overachieving Lane finds himself at Latham House, a sanatorium for teens suffering from an incurable strain of tuberculosis. Part hospital and part boarding school, Latham is a place of endless rules and confusing rituals, where it’s easier to fail breakfast than it is to flunk French.

There, Lane encounters a girl he knew years ago. Instead of the shy loner he remembers, Sadie has transformed. At Latham, she is sarcastic, fearless, and utterly compelling. Her friends, a group of eccentric troublemakers, fascinate Lane, who has never stepped out of bounds his whole life. And as he gradually becomes one of them, Sadie shows him their secrets: how to steal internet, how to sneak into town, and how to disable the med sensors they must wear at all times.

But there are consequences to having secrets, particularly at Latham House. And as Lane and Sadie begin to fall in love and their group begins to fall sicker, their insular world threatens to come crashing down. Told in alternating points of view, Extraordinary Means is a darkly funny story about doomed friendships, first love, and the rare miracle of second chances.

#MORELOVEINPH: ROMANCE WRITERS OF THE PHILIPPINES' 1ST MULTI-AUTHOR ONLINE BASH

#MoreLoveInPH: Romance Writers of the Philippines’ 1st Multi-Author Online Bash
We all talk about supporting local authors, but finding authors we enjoy reading who have books available to us can sometimes be a challenge. The writers behind Romance Writers of the Philippines have recognized the difficulty facing many authors today, whether traditionally or independently published, and they formed the organization with the goal of “working toward better written, better edited, better produced, and better marketed romance novels by Pinoy writers.”
To this end, the org will be hosting a party in honor of some of its member writers, and they’re inviting anyone who wants to read more romance by Filipino authors and discover new authors to follow to come join in the fun!

Here are the party details:
What: #MoreLoveInPH: Romance Writers of the Philippines’ 1st Multi-Author Online Bash
When: Saturday, June 27 (10AM-9PM), and Sunday, June 28 (10AM-9PM)

Here’s what participants can expect to do the bash:
  • Learn about and interact with local romance authors (authors will be doing one-hour takeovers throughout the weekend)
  • Join contests for bookish freebies—one author is giving away a free ebook for every person who comments during her takeover!
  • Support local authors! Writers don’t always get as much love as you should, so it’s great if you just drop by and tell them how intrigued you are by the book you just learned about or even how much you enjoyed a book of theirs that they read! RWP will also be sponsoring random giveaways for participants who invite their friends and who are active during the weekend-long event.
Not sure how to join? It’s easy! Just follow these three steps:
  1. Visit the Facebook event page for #MoreLoveInPH: bit.ly/MoreLoveInPH.
  2. Confirm that you’re going to the event by clicking on “Join”
  3. On the days of the event, drop by the event page—authors will be posting ice breaker games (with giveaways to be raffled off to commenters), info on where to follow them and on their latest books, and more!

Optional: Invite your friends to join the party too! Then on the morning of June 27 or anytime during the course of the event, have them nominate or vote for you for the top inviter on RWP’s post—top inviters will get swag and GCs!

And just to give you an idea of who will be participating in the bash, check out the takeover schedule below:
