Format Acquired: Hardbound
Source: Gifted from Precious of Fragments of Life
Published Janurary 22nd 2013 by Balzer + Bray

Nikki Beckett could only watch as her boyfriend, Jack, sacrificed himself to save her, taking her place in the Tunnels of the Everneath for eternity — a debt that should’ve been hers. She’s living a borrowed life, and she doesn’t know what to do with the guilt. And every night Jack appears in her dreams, lost and confused and wasting away.
Desperate for answers, Nikki turns to Cole, the immortal bad boy who wants to make her his queen — and the one person least likely to help. But his heart has been touched by everything about Nikki, and he agrees to assist her in the only way he can: by taking her to the Everneath himself.
Nikki and Cole descend into the Everneath, only to discover that their journey will be more difficult than they’d anticipated — and more deadly. But Nikki vows to stop at nothing to save Jack — even if it means making an incredible sacrifice of her own.
In this enthralling sequel to Everneath, Brodi Ashton tests the bonds of destiny and explores the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.
MY REVIEW

"Stay with me, Becks. Dream of me. I am ever yours."

OMG! I've waited so long for this sequel and it's finally in my hands!!! *squeals* Even though this stayed on my shelf for a month or so. Lol. I know this was published about a year ago, but since my Everneath copy is paperback, I've waited for the paperback release of this book! But when I learned about the Pinoy Book Tours Christmas Party, this book topped my wishlist! Thanks to Precious of Fragments of Life for the copy! I got a hardbound, but I'll still be buying a paperback! :D

Jack took Nikki's place in the Tunnels of Everneath. That was a big sacrifice and I can tell how sad and guilty Nikki is for what he'd done. So she did everything she can to go after him at the Tunnels, even if it means asking help from the guy she hated the most -- Cole. Plus, time is running out and Jack's mom blames her for her son's disappearance. Good thing is, Will, Jack's brother, believes she's innocent. Well, since he knew everything about the Everneath and Jack's sacrifice for Nikki.

The only thing keeping Jack alive is Nikki. She has to hold onto him every night when he visits her in her dreams. She need to make him remember and give him glimpses of their memories together. It's just sad that even though they wanted to hold each other, they can't. It hurts so much, knowing you can see the one you love, talk to to him, but you can't touch him. And if ever Nikki gave up, she'll lose Jack forever.
"How am I supposed to do this, Jack?"
"Do what?"
"Live this borrowed life. Without you. Knowing that you're there because of me."
At the first chapters, you will see that Cole has been missing for months and not much was explained about this so I suggest you read Neverfall, an Everneath novella which happened right after Everneath. It's in Cole's POV so you'll understand better his feelings for Nikki and why he's doing all these things. (When I read Neverfall, I loved Cole even more. *winks*) Anyway, Cole somehow showed himself to Nikki unexpectedly. Nikki wanted to shove him away but then she realized that Cole is her only key to go to the land of the Everlivings so she had no choice but to talk to him. As usual, Cole tried his best to convince Nikki to come with him and reign at the Everneath.
"You showed me that relationships are worth sacrifices. I used to think they were fleeting, but I know better now. . .You made me a better person. I mean, a better immortal."
At some point, Nikki was able to convince Cole to accompany her to Everneath. To be honest, I find it a little bit icky on how to go to the Everneath. Damn, you have to swallow a strand of hair or a piece of an Everliving's fingernail! It's odd, but it's not a common way to travel to a different world. Usually you're gonna needa gem or something to do so, so I'm quite amazed how the author was able to put that up. Also, a lot more of Everneath was unveiled in this book. I saw a wider view of this world and I am amazed by how Ashton described every corner of it. There's even a map of Everneath at the first page of the book! Go grab your copy if you want to see and navigate the land of the Everlivings!

Yes, the sole purpose why Nikki took the risk of returning to Everneath is Jack, but in this book, Cole is the main guy. Seems like Jack can only pull it off at the Surface. But Cole? He can on both! Well, there was a short time where I was confused whether I'm Team Jack or Team Cole. Jack's words were just...so sweet. It's part of Nikki's flashbacks, though.
With his head still down, he said, "I waited for you."
"But it's a race. Why did you wait for me?"
He lifted his head so that his eyes met mine. "I always wait for you. . .I'm always waiting for you."
There's nothing bad I could say about Jack. There's nothing wring with him and I can say that his feelings for Nikki were true and sincere. Only a guy with a sincere heart would sacrifice himself like that. But I'm still Team Cole! I admit I have the "Second Guy Syndrome." LOL. And the following words made me swoon all over Cole. I believe his feelings for Nikki were real. I believe he's not using her for his own profit. I... I just believe that he's good deep inside.
Cole and I turned toward the water. "Ready?" I asked.
"We have no idea what we're jumping into."
"I know. But I don't have anything to lose."
"I do!. . .You have to know. . .If I lost you. . .Why can't you see that would be the end of me?"
And I loved that there's more action here. More story, and more twists! I really enjoyed the part where Cole and Nikki, together with Max and Ashe traveled on their quest save Jack from the Tunnels. Nikki's character improved so much. She's sad and in deep grief but she doesn't let her feelings get in her way to save Jack. Instead, those negative feelings gave her positive vibes and determination to save him. She's braver and smarter.

I can clearly picture out everything! The water, wind, and fire obstacles in the Everneath were Ashton's writing is so good and never fail to amaze my imagination. Plus, the ending! I didn't never saw that coming! I think that's the main twist in this story. And those words she said, so badass! I can't wait to see how she'll put those words into action!
“You know the Everneath?"
"Uh, yeah, I think I'm familiar with it."
"Good. Because I'm going to destroy it. I'm taking the whole. Damn. Thing. Down. Are you with me?
"Always. Forever.”
Gaaaaaah! I love this book so much and I can't wait to read Evertrue! Thanks to HarperCollins International for sending me an ARC of Evertrue!

EXCERPT

"The scroll chose you. For whatever reason, she's your reap."

"Well, that sucks." Leila chewed her bottom lip. "If I don't do it?"

Edon hesitated before he said, "Her soul will rot inside her body. Do you have any idea what that’s like? She'll be a living corpse, a shell of a person. She won't feel anything including love. We as reapers, the undead, feel more than she ever will alive."

Leila swallowed the lump in her throat. "How do you know that?"

"Because I've seen what it does to a person," Edon said. "That little girl deserves better."

Review: BLUE IS FOR NIGHTMARES by Laurie Faria Stolarz

Blue is for Nightmares
by Laurie Faria Stolarz
Series: Blue is for Nightmares#1
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal
Format Acquired: Paperback (Deluxe Spellbook Edition)
Source: Purchased from Fullybooked
Published November 1st 2003 by Turtleback Books

"I Know Your Secret . . ."
Nightmares. Dark Secrets. Premonitions of Death.

Welcome to Stacey’s World!

It begins with the dreams. White lilies, the death flower. Being chased through the woods, knowing she cannot outrun her pursuer forever. Visits from the spirit of a girl who was murdered. Threats and taunts from an unseen assailant.

But that’s only the start. When the dreams begin to spill over into Stacey’s waking life, that’s when the nightmare really begins.

Stacey's junior year at boarding school isn't easy. She's not the most popular girl at school, or the smartest, or the prettiest. She's got a crush on her best friend's boyfriend, and an even darker secret that threatens to ruin her friendships for good. And now she's having nightmares again. Not just any nightmares – these dreams are too real to ignore, like she did three years ago. The last time she ignored them, a little girl died.

This time they're about Drea, her best friend who's become the target of one seriously psycho stalker. It started with weird e-mails and freaky phone calls. Now someone's leaving Drea white lilies – the same death lilies that have been showing up in Stacey's dreams. Everybody thinks it's just a twisted game . . . until another girl at school is brutally murdered. There are no witnesses. Worst of all, no one has a perfect alibi.

With everyone as a potential suspect, Stacey turns to the one secret weapon she can trust – the folk magic taught to her by her grandmother. Will Stacey's magic be strong enough to expose the true killer, or will the killer make her darkest nightmares come true?
MY REVIEW

Some people have always wondered why and how I came up living a life full of reading and books. Well, I love reading books ever since. But the FIRST Young Adult I ever read was White is for Magic by Laurie Faria Stolarz. Ever since I finish reading that book (which is way back in highschool) I spent my time looking for the first installment in the series. I don't even know before that I can reserve books online, or order them if they're not available here in the country.

So when I finally had a blog and learned many things on how to acquire books, I was happy yo finally have my copy of Blue is for Nightmares. I always wondered how it all began...

This book kept me hooked. I envy Stacey, 'cause she's a witch (Anyway, I'm a vampire) and it's very interesting everytime she's doing one of her spells. I learned a lot of spells, since I bought the Deluxe Spellbook Edition. I like it how certain colors of candles represent something, how she mixes different kinds of oils and other ingredients to complete her spells.

The best part of this book is how her dreams about Maura haunted her, and how it made me itch to know who the bad guy really is. Some said they figured it out very early, but I didn't. Lol. Then here goes the death of another bitch, Veronica Leeman. It made me more curious as each chapter goes by. Even though Drea, her bestfriend, is a little bit bitchy, I didn't want her to like, die or something. On the other hand, I can't help but love Amber. She's funny and bubbly at times. She's like the neutralizer between Stacey and Drea when things got heated between them.

About the romance, it's the love triangle between bestfriends type of romance. Stacey is inlove with Chad who happens to be the boyfriend of Stacey who happens to be her bestfriend.  Enough for the romance part, I didn't really focus on that part of the book. Heh.

Reading this book gave me the creeps. Well, it should since it a mystery-thriller type. I enjoyed reading it and it kept me intrigued until the end, which makes me wanna read the next books. The titles were pretty interesting too! Good job, Stolarz. Good job. :)

MY REVIEW

When I first signed up for the tour, I chose to post just an excerpt. But then I realized that I should not let the chance pass by to read a book with a plot that interests me a lot. I told myself, "Damn it, Algel! It's a werewolf-vampire kind of romance! You should read it!" And the decision I made didn't make me regret. Fall of Darkness is such a great story to read.

So, what's up with the werewolf-vampire romance?

As far as I know, it's a forbidden kind of love. Werewolves and vampires race were mortal enemies. They're like heaven and hell. Sunshine and rain. Ice and fire. Yin and yang.

Dominic is assigned to kill Katerina, also known as Kate. She's a vampire and destined to end the darkness and race of Dominic's entire werewolf race. But Kate know nothing about this since she's not yet transformed. Dominic could've killed her easily, but ended up falling for her.

This is such a good book. The character build up, the romance, the suspense, the author did a great job. I love Dominic. I fell for him easily. The fact that he's true to his feelings for Kate, he turned his back from his family for her. He's willing to fight for her. There's just a part where I hated Kate. I didn't understand her real intentions when she learned the truth from Dominic, and met her tutore, Alexander. It seemed like she love them both and sworn eternity with the two of them. But later on, that hatred for her changed, but not my hatred for Alex. I used to love the name Alex, but this time, I loathe him. So. Much.

I'm looking forward to what happens next to Dominic and Kate's forbidden love story. This book is excellent. Addictive. You will fall inlove with Dominic every step of the way.

Infamous vampires Jadeon and Orpheus reemerge into Ingrid’s life. But what are their intentions? Are they allies or enemies?
Ingrid will be forced to push past the boundaries of fear and love in order to solve a centuries-old riddle that delves deeper than she could have imagined.
This is the time to let inhibitions go. This is the time of the Bohemian.

MY REVIEW

Another vampire story.

Which means another vampire boyfriend. (smirks)

Bohemian started with Ingrid, a policewoman, stealing some sort of evidence she needed for a case she's working on from a suspect. Yeah, you read that right -- a policewoman stealing. She was so close to getting caught, luckily, she's friends with a vampire named Orpheus, and he helped her out.

She was marked as a Gothica, or a vampire's servant who agreed to be turned after five years. And now, a girl had gone missing and she found out that the girl, named Beatrice was also marked. Like any other mortal girls associated with vampires, Ingrid is a fearless girl. Fearless, as in she's not afraid to lure into a place full of vampires, even though she knew they can drain her blood out any minute she step a foot at their territory. Well, I guess she's not afraid since Orpheus marked her as his own Gothica to protect her.

Ingrid is inloved with a vampire named Jadeon, but they broke up. And she's still inlove with him. I guess it happened within the first three books (which I need to read badly). She keeps it to herself but she didn't give up in finding Jadeon. Jadeon hid himself from Ingrid but later on showed up to her because of a punishment. Punishment, huh.
This melancholy wasn't getting me anywhere. It was time to ignore this aching for Jadeon that devoured my insides. This misery of heartbreak for which there was only one cure; throw myself into work.
My favorite character is Orpheus. I thought he's the one for Ingrid since they were always together during the first scenes in the book. Plus, Ingrid is Orpheus' gothica. I kinda felt sad when it was still Jadeon that Ingrid chose. And also thankful. I can have Orpheus. The sexy, mysterious but sarcastic vampire. Lol.

After all, this in not the kind of vampire book with lots of neck biting and blood sucking in it. It's more of finding this missing vamp girl named Beatrice, mysteries, secrets, and ways to keep the vampire society hidden from this world.

I liked this book but I have a lot of questions and I'm looking forward to know more about their past lives.

MY REVIEW

(I wrote this review while watching the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship. I can't believe I was able to work on this while cheering for Gilas Pilipinas! Anyway, congratulations Iran!)

To be honest with you guys, the first half of this book almost bored me to death. There has been a lot of telling about Alessa's daily routine over and over again. Sleep. Wake up. Do something else. See the ghost. Become speechless. Tell Janie. Then repeat.

Somehow, I understand Alessa. It's not that easy to move on after her parents died of car accident, leaving her all alone by herself. She's lucky to have her bestfriend, Janie, by her side to help her move on with her daily life. Plus, I can't understand why this book fall under Dystopia when everything seems to be "right now". College, sorority, late night parties, etc. I even considered DNF-ing this book, but I just can't bear not finishing something I started. So I continued reading on.

I was curious about the "ghost" and what is her connection to Alessa. Why does he keep on showing to her then just disappear? Maybe if I were Alessa I'd be frozen too everytime I see him, especially his eyes. The good thing is Alessa can tell Janie about this without her thinking she's insane. Instead, she comforts her and helped her discover the mystery behind these apparitions. Janie is an ideal bestfriend.

When I came to the next half of the book, I realized I can't stop reading Stitch! I got stitched to it! I totally regret what I thought about it because it suddenly became so good. I personally don't like Physics, or anything related to Math (yes, I'm part Chinese but I hate Math. I'm bad at Math, and by bad I mean very, very bad) but the Physics concepts in the story was amazing! It took me time to absorb and understand them but I love the ideas and the theories about time travel. While I'm still enthralled with these ideas, suddenly everything changed. Shocking revelations were exposed and I'm really shocked. I even stopped reading then stared at the ceiling for about 10 minutes, then I continued to read.

Yeah, I know I'm weird. But Stitch suddenly turned out to be more than I expected. The issues I had with it were concealed by the twists and turns in the rest of the book. Oh! And the ending? I love it! Though it wasn't what I expected it to be. But as what they say, expect the unexpected. Aside from that, I learned a lesson from this book: Never judge the book unless you finish reading it.

So, for sci-fi dystopia and paranormal romance lovers out there, you should totally check out this one.

Book Review: Dance With a Vampire (Vampire Kisses #4) by Ellen Schreiber

Title: Dance With A Vampire
Author: Ellen Schreiber
Page count: 179 pages
Rating: 5 stars

Book synopsis:

There's a new vampire in town. His name is Valentine Maxwell. Goth-girl Raven knows this latest intruder can only mean trouble--he's the younger sibling of two vampires she fought to drive out of Dullsville. But when her brother, Billy, befriends this dangerous tween night prowler, the stakes are suddenly higher. Though torn by the excitement of every teen girl's fantasy--attending the prom with her boyfriend--Raven must do everything she can to protect Billy.

Valentine's appearance may pose even further threats. Could he somehow know Raven's innermost feelings about becoming immortal for her true love, Alexander? The far-from-ordinary romance of these two teen outsiders takes another surprise-filled spin in the fourth book of Ellen Schreiber's applauded Vampire Kisses series.

Book Review:
Wooo! I so love what's happening so far.. It's thrilling and exciting. I can picture out Valentine's image the way he's described in the book. So far I'm not disappointed with the series since Raven and Alexander looks so cute together.. And I can say Alexander really loves Raven since he doesn't want her to join his dark underworld. Raven shows how much she loves her brother Billy Boy by doing her best to protect her from Valentine.. I just don't want the way Raven's prom ended.. It made me sad for a while but definitely this kept me excited to reading the next book!

I'm obsessed with vampires and werewolf thingy. But I have to admit, this is the first vampire book I read. I became obsessed with vampires because of the TV series True Blood and The Vampire Diaries and from that I decided to try reading books on them. So thus, I chose Vampire Kisses series to be the firsts on my list.

I was so inloved with this book that I finished it in one day, and happened to read it for the second time! I could see myself in Raven, the main character, who's very much hooked into vampires. Except that I don't do goth fashion. The book isn't boring at any part, and makes you excited for every chapter that you'll read. Then there's the vampire boyfriends, Alexander. Who wouldn't fall inlove with him? I really wanna feel how to be loved and protected by a vampire and Alexander made me feel it even if I'm just reading.. the only thing I don't like in him is that he has long hair.. I remember Eric form True Blood, he has long hair the first time I saw him in the series then he got a haircut and looked hotter! I think Alexander will look more handsome and hotter too.. Eh?

This is a must-read for all YA readers out there, this is complete of humor, family, friendship and romance with a mix of supernatural beings.
